This contribution was based on the company’s funding policy, which is to contribute to defined benefit pension plans when pension laws and/or economics either require or encourage funding. On March 4, 2021, the company announced changes to the design of its U.S. tax-qualified and non-qualified pension plans (collectively, the “U.S. Plans”) and, effective December 31, 2023, the company will freeze the pensionable compensation and credited service amounts used to calculate pension benefits for employees who participate in the U.S. plans. A similar change was announced in December 2021 regarding the company’s Canadian pension plans.
